Measuring Friendship in Social Media – more than a click

When I saw Delta Airlines say they would give $1 to Breast Cancer Awareness (up to $50,000) for every “Like” on their page I was dismayed.

Building a Social Network of loyal fans is no different than making friends in the real world. Sure, some shallow friends can be bribed into being your friend, but in the end, they will never be the loyal friend you were looking for. I console myself by saying it was probably some nieve person who didn’t understand the dynamics of social media.

The only reward of virtue is virtue; the only way to have a friend is to be one.

–Ralph Waldo Emerson

Friendship is important to our emotional well being. Friendship must be nurtured, just like a garden. What worked yesterday may not work today.

People look for friends who make them feel good.

So, when you are cultivating fans think about them and what makes them feel good and what makes them look forward to your posts. Make them feel good by responding to their comments or cheering them in their accomplishments.

Actions speak louder than words.

If Delta had announced that it planned to donate $50,000 to Breast Cancer Awareness in recognition of the XXX number of women who have faced the disease at their office; their actions would speak to the generosity of the company. It would have given a human face to an otherwise sterile company and would have made their fans more loyal.

Listen up Delta!
